The New
Hampshire Potters Guild
News Letter
Minutes for the June 2007 PG Meeting
President Susan Babine called the June meeting
to order at 3:40 at the home of Julie Lombard.
The first item of business was to remind members
of the continuing need to accumulate bowls for
the Empty Bowls event that NHPG co-sponsors each
October to benefit New Horizons in Manchester.
Sue noted that the intention had been for members
to bring clay and hand form bowls during the June
meeting. However, she stressed that members could
bring donation bowls for the Empty Bowls Project
to any meeting.
Sue asked Ben Putnam to report on the status of
NHPG1s anticipated workshops. Ben said Kristen
Kieffer and Pete Pinnell, two well-known and widely
respected potters, have already committed to presenting
fall workshops. Detailed information about the
work of these potters is available on their web
sites.
Kristen Kieffer, known for thrown and altered
pieces with elaborately decorated surfaces, will
demonstrate and lecture September 22 and 23 at
Winnacunnet High School in Hampton. NHPG members
who are in good standing as of 6/3/07 may attend
for $35; non-member attendance is $75. Attendees
should bring a brown bag lunch. Further details
about this workshop are published elsewhere in
this issue of Potluck. The Guild is responsible
for hosting Kristen during the workshop. Kathy
Feltz, a Hampton resident, offered accomodations.
Thank you, Kathy.
Pete Pinnell will offer a glaze workshop in October
or early November at Franklin Pierce in Ringe.
This event will be co-sponsored by NHPG and FP.
Further details will be forthcoming.
Lauren Dadmun said that Plymouth State College
is offering a workshop with Welsh potter Phil
Rogers on Nov 7 and 8. The Holderness School will
present an exhibition of works by Phil Rogers
at the Holderness School Gallery, just a mile
from the workshop location. The pieces for this
show are being selected from the Pucker Gallery1s
collection of Roger1s work. The Plymouth State
workshop will be open to the public for a modest
fee.
Jeff Brown reported that the committee for the
Annual Potters Market is working on publicity
(including improved signs) for the event scheduled
for October 27 at the same Manchester location,
St Mary1s Academy. Registration is $50 and restricted
to NHPG members only. Early indications are that
22 members plan to participate. Exhibitors are
restricted to using tabletop displays. Two potters
can split the fee and share the table (31x81).
Look for an entry application in this issue of
Potluck.
Sue announced that ads in Potluck are now available
at $100 for the year. The ads run in each of the
five different issues that comprise a year. She
also announced that she had received information
from a couple of potters in Center Sandown who
are selling their equipment and want $198 for
everything. Also, Sue knows of someone willing
to give a working electric kiln away to anyone
who will come get it. Contact Sue for further
information if interested.
The August meeting traditionally occurs the Wednesday
of Sunapee Fair week. This year1s date falls on
August 8. Dave Pellerin has volunteered to host
a catered gathering at his home located a short
drive from the Fair. Look for a map and other
information in this issue. Dave has graciously
offered NHPG members the opportunity to camp on
his property. He has bathroom and shower facilities
available in his pottery. Thank you, Dave! Dave
has also volunteered to lend wheels to the Guild
for the Pottery at the Fair activity. Double thank
you, Dave!!
Rebecca Esty is planning yet another amazing feast.
Cost to NHPG members in good standing is $10 plus
the option to invite a guest to join them for
an additional $10. Others may attend only if they
have reserved and paid in advance. The cost to
non-members is $30 and includes membership in
NHPG through December, 2007.
Ben, who is again in charge of Pottery at the
Fair, reported that volunteers are needed to staff
the registration table and to demonstrate in the
Pottery at the Fair tent August 3-12. Check elsewhere
in this issue for information on volunteering.
Come give three hours to NHPG and enjoy the balance
of the day the Fair at no cost to you. Because
Ben is not available the first two days of the
Fair, Sharon Teller will be in charge of the activity
on Saturday and Sunday, August 4 and 5.
Jeff Brown reported that there will be an experimental
firing of the community kiln in August and a regular
firing in the fall. Those interested in further
details should contact Jeff at jeffbrownpottery.com
After discussion about NHPG awards given at the
League of New Hampshire Craftsmen Show, members
voted to give two prizes of $100 each. One award
will be given for outstanding functional entry
and the other for outstanding decorativentry.
Sue encouraged members to suggest names of potential
jurors. The Guild pays the juror $100 making total
cost to NHPG of $300. A number of people are under
consideration for juror this year.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:35.
Respectfully submitted on 14 June, 2007.
